STEP 1: How to Locate the Medial Pterygoid Trigger Point #One

The Medial Pterygoid is a muscle present in the jaw. It’s location is quite deep and difficult to access. Place your hand behind the angle of the jaw to find the trigger point. This location is also one of the easier access points to the muscle. The Medial Pterygoid helps with the closure of the jaw, though some refer to it as a troublesome muscle since people affected by jaw-joint problems experience constant clicking noises originating there when opening the mouth wide.

STEP 2: How to Self-Release the Medial Pterygoid Trigger Point # One

The Medial Pterygoid is a deep muscle in the jaw and has a trigger point near the angle of the jaw, about one finger width forward. Dig in with your thumb, applying pressure while gently supporting the rest of your jaw. This can be very intense; be careful not to press too hard. If this movement isn’t comfortable when using your thumb, use the index finger of your opposing hand to dig deep and apply pressure. Regardless of digit, make sure to keep your head down a bit to offer better access to the trigger point. Hold for about five to ten seconds and release. PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE if you feel uncomfortable. Don’t apply too much pressure, or for too long. Remember as well, if you are not fully confident in this practice, or are unable to locate the trigger point on your own, please use the “Find Therapist” button to search for a qualified medical practitioner.

STEP 3: How to Stretch the Medial PterygoidTrigger Point # One

Stretching the Medial Pterygoid is simple. The Medial Pterygoid helps in bringing up your lower jaw, as shown in the location video. In order to stretch it, we will be reversing that action. The most natural way to do this is through a big, long yawn. This process opens the muscle and helps release any built-up tension.
